This serialized work tells the story of the Baselga family, a noble Castilian lineage descended from Reconquista heroes, set in early nineteenth-century Spain. The narrative explores how the Jesuit Order patiently weaves a web to seize the wealthy family's fortune. The novel contains harsh criticism of the Company of Jesus, leading some to dismiss it as mere pulp fiction. Blasco Ibáñez later repudiated this youthful work, excluding it from his complete works.
