João de Deus
Cartilha Maternal; ou, Arte de Leitura
"Cartilha Maternal; ou, Arte de Leitura" by João de Deus is a pedagogical work published in 1876. Designed as a reading primer for children, it introduced a revolutionary teaching method in Portugal, where illiteracy was widespread. After initial resistance to earlier educational reforms, this work gained rapid acceptance among teachers and intellectuals. By 1882, it became mandatory in Portuguese schools and remained one of Portugal's most reprinted books, shaping literacy education for nearly half a century.
