"Dante's Louteringsberg" by Dante Alighieri is an allegorical epic poem written in the first quarter of the 14th century (ca. 1307-1321). Part of "The Divine Comedy," this work describes the poet's imaginary journey through Purgatory, the second realm of the afterlife. Guided by the Roman poet Virgil, Dante encounters souls cleansing themselves of earthly sins as they ascend toward Heaven. Written in the Florentine vernacular rather than Latin, the poem blends Christian theology with classical philosophy, creating vivid portraits of individual souls on their path to redemption.
