"Resa a discrezione" by Giuseppe Giacosa is a comedy first performed in 1886. A widowed marchesa in Rome makes a wager that she can seduce a young explorer and prevent him from joining an Arctic expedition. Her calculated scheme succeeds, but when the earnest Andrea discovers he's been the object of a bet, genuine feelings emerge unexpectedly. What began as a game of seduction becomes a complex entanglement of pride, hurt, and uncertain love between two people trapped by their own manipulations.
